This study was designed to investigate the potential of Emblica officinalis, Acacia concinna, Eclipta alba, Sapindus mukorossi, Withania somnifera, Nardostachys jatamansi, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Aloe-vera extracts in the promotion of hair growth. Hair growth promoting activity of gel formulation of Emblica officinalis, Acacia concinna, Eclipta alba, Sapindus mukorossi, Withania somnifera, Nardostachys jatamansi, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Aloe-vera was studied following its topical administration. Alopecia was induced in Wistar albino female rats by subcutaneous administration of testosterone propionate (1 mg/day). The injection was given once daily 5 days a week up to 12 weeks. Evaluation of hair loss inhibition was done by topical administration of herbal extracts and monitoring various parameters like hair initiation and hair completion time, hair density, hair length, anagen/telogen (A/T) ratio and histological observation of animal skin sections. Minoxidil solution was applied topically as standard. Groups treated with gel formulation of the plant showed hair re-growth as reflected by hair initiation and completion time, hair density, hair length, anagen/telogen (A/T) ratio and skin (histopathological studies) sections. These parameters showed significant results in polyherbal gel treated group as compared to single herbal gel treated groups of Emblica officinalis, Withania somnifera, Eclipta alba, Acacia concinna, Nardostachys jatamansi, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Sapindus mukorossi and Aloe vera. Morphological and histological observations of hair growth show significant active proliferation. Gel formulation of Emblica officinalis, Acacia concinna, Eclipta alba, Sapindus mukorossi, Withania somnifera, Nardostachys jatamansi, Trigonella foenum-graecum, Aloe-vera definitely promotes hair growth by inducing anagen in telogen (resting) phase hair follicles. Animals treated with polyherbal formulation gel showed better efficacy as compared to single formulated drugs.
