Preliminary phytochemical evaluation of stem and leaves extract of Rauvolfia tetraphylla in petroleum ether, chloroform and ethanol showed the presence of carbohydrate, glycoside, alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, tannins and phenols. All the extracts were evaluated for their in-vitro anticancer activity against cancer cell line (HT 29 adenocarcinoma) by MTT assay, in-vitro antitubercular activity against M. tuberculosis H37Rv by microplate almar blue dye method and in-vitro antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria S. aureus, E. feacali and Gram negative bacteria E. coli, Klebsiella by serial dilution method. The anticancer activity results showed that chloroform extract of stem and leaf, ethanol extract of leaf exhibited excellent anticancer activity with 100% lysis at 10 microgram/ml. Most of the plant extracts of Rauvolfia tetraphylla were found to be active against Mycobacterium tuberculae and bacterial strains used in the study. Thus, the results of present work supports the traditional use of Rauvolfia tetraphylla and can be further explored for their potential therapeutic use.
