Plastic will not disintegrate unlike paper, jute, metal, glass or mud. Plastics are also known to their toxic effects from the plasticizers like polyvinylchloride, Diethyl hexyl phthalate, polyestrene, poly chlorinated biphenyls etc. Study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of planned health teaching on plastic hazards among secondary school children. Objectives for this study were to identify the knowledge of high school students about the hazards of plastic use, to develop and validate a planned teaching programme on the hazards of plastic use, to evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching programme on the hazards of plastic use in terms of gain in knowledge scores. The pre-experimental one group pre-test post-test design was adopted for the study. The sample consisted of 100 students of secondary school. The schools were selected conveniently and the sample by stratified random sampling technique. The data were collected by validated structured knowledge questionnaire with the reliability of 0.78. There was significant hike in the mean post test (X2 =22.81) when compared with the mean pre-test (X1=14.16) knowledge scores. The computed ‘t’ value (t99=28.7 p<0.05) showed significance in the effectiveness of planned teaching programme. The area wise knowledge scores of post-test were highly significant in all areas except regarding the use of plastics. There was no association of knowledge scores and selected variables like class of study, age, sex and religion. The result showed a high effectiveness of planned teaching programme is in increasing the level of knowledge among high school students regarding the hazards of plastic use. It has given a new avenue to the researcher to widen the horizon on more research aspects of plastic use.
