RECENT ADVANCES IN DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS
NS Vyawahare, Swati Narkhede, Aditi Kotasthane*

With its significant morbidity and associated mortality, Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) presents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to all clinicians directly involved in patient care. In view of the shortcomings in the existing methods for the prophylaxis, diagnosis and treatment of DVT, it has been the aim of the researchers to try and come up with newer methods, with their benefits cancelling the shortcomings of the previous therapies. Recent breakthroughs in minimally invasive interventional radiology techniques such as use of indium-lll- labelled platelets and use of automated strain gauge plethysmography, however, are improving the prognosis of DVT. Also, the use of the Lympha Press Pneumatic Apparatus is being seen as an effective tool for the prophylactic treatment of DVT. With newer anticoagulants like Fondaparinux, Idraparinux, Razaxaban, Apixaban, Dabigatran, Lepirudin and techniques like the Power Pulse technique and retrievable filters, the scope for research in the management of DVT is broadening every day.
