The liver is a complex organ system that is involved in a variety of life sustaining processes. The complex development of liver and the biliary system in utero results in multiple and complicated anatomical variations. An absolute knowledge of these anatomical variations, careful dissection and identification of these structures at the time of surgery is required for the safe performance of all hepatobiliary operarions. There are three major hepatic veins-right,middle and left. The study of diameter of right hepatic vein at its opening into inferior vena cava has been undertaken on 15 livers from embalmed cadavers. The veins were studied radiologically followed by dissection. On radiology, diameter was found to be 0.8-2.4cm. Comparison couldnot be done as such a study has not been reported as yet.The results obtained by the dissection methods are in accordance with the work done by previous researchers.Diameter obtained was 0.7-2.0.Mean obtained was 1.167+ 0.358cm.Thus, this study has been done for correctly performing liver transplantation procedures and to cope up anatomic anomalies.
