Daruharidara (Berberis aristata) has been used in folkare medicine in various ailments and its usage had been described in sushruta and samhita, thus listed in official publications i.e. Ayurveda pharmacopeia. Its formulations has been prescribing in Ayurveda namely Rasaut, Darvyadi kvatha, Darvyadi leha, Darvyadi taila, Rasanjana, Dasanga lepa. Alkaloids, polyphenols and flavanoids are primarily presents in hydro alcoholic extracts. More than 20 patents and 39 clinical trials have been registered over the use of its active constituents berberine and formulations. This review article summarizes the various pharmacological and clinical status of Berberis aristata with specificity on anticancer, antihyperlipidemic, antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and anti-osteoporotic activities. Nearly 187 research articles from the different source Directory of Open Access Journals PubMed, Springer, Wiley Online, Official publication, Science direct, open DOAR, Public Library of Science (PLOS) and clinical trial.org to extract the pharmacology and pharmacognostical research on B. aristata Research studies conducted on the B.aristata revealed the use of active constituent’s berberine. Anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-diarrhoeal cardiovascular effect and anticancer activities in pre clinical screening however in clinical trials anti diabetic and anti cancer are specifically targeted ailments.
