Diabetes mellitus is one of the major worldwide health problem counted a significant proportion of both developed and developing countries. This present study was based on herbal medicinal plants used as antidiabetic drugs. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a set of metabolic diseases characterized by hyperglycemia as consequence of defects resulting in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Traditional medicines derived from medicinal plants are used by about 60% of the world’s population. Natural herbs have been highly esteemed source of medicine throughout the human records. Nowadays they are broadly used which are the growing part of modern high-tech medicine. Diabetes mellitus is one of the common endocrine disorders prevalent in almost all of the countries. According to International Diabetes Federation, data, India is on the top among all countries with the highest number of diabetes patients, China, America, Indonesia, Japan, Pakistan, Russia, Brazil, Italy and Bangladesh follow. In the year 2000, the total number of diabetes patients in India stood at 31.7 million and is expected to rise by more than 100% in the year 2030 to account to a whopping 79.4 million. Therefore, there is a need to develop safe and effective treatment modalities for diabetes. The WHO has listed 21,000 plants, which are used for medicinal purposes around all the countries. A list of medicinal herbal plants with proven antidiabetic and related beneficial effects and of herbal drugs used in treatment of diabetes is compiled.
