Therefore herbals drugs are useful due to their applicability and less side effects in the treatment of epilepsy. Butea monosperma is a small to medium size tree used in ayurveda, homeopathic and unani medicine for various purposes. The aim of study was to evaluate the antiepileptic activity of butanolic extract of leaves of Butea monosperma against pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) induced convulsions in mice. In this study Group I serves as (Convulsive control) received pentylenetetrazole (65 mg/kg i.p.) Group II received pentylenetetrazole (65mg/kg i.p.) and Diazepam (4mg/kg i.p.) Group III and Group IV received Butea monosperma (100mg/kg p.o.) and (200mg/kg p.o.) respectively. The results of the study show that butanolic extract of the leaves of Butea monosperma possesses anticonvulsant activity in mice. Butanolic extract of the leaves of Butea monosperma reduced duration of onset convulsion induced by pentylenetetrazole. The result were expresses as mean ±SEM and were statistically analyzed by one way ANOVA. This study concluded that butanolic extract of the leaves of Butea monosperma showed anticonvusant activity against pentylenetetrazole induced convulsions in mice and reduced mortality.
