Gemcitabine hydrochloride is used as an anti-cancer drug. The aim of this study was to develop colorimetric method for the estimation of gemcitabine in bulk and lyophilized powder for injection. In colorimetric method the absorption maximum was found to be 556 nm and beer’s law obeyed in the concentration range of 10-30 µg/ml. The LOD and LOQ were found to be 0.27 and 0.84 µg/ml respectively with coefficient of correlation 0.997. Molar absorptivity was found to be 7.9 x 105, indicating that the intensity of absorption at the selected absorption maximum is strongest. The method validated for linearity, accuracy and precision as per ICH (Q2, R1) guidelines and applied for the quantitative analysis of gemcitabine hydrochloride in bulk and dosage form.
