Jaggery is an important medicinal product being consumed in India since time immemorial. It is traditionally prepared by concentrating the sugarcane juice on constant boiling. In present work, chemical investigation on Jaggery has been done. The physicochemical parameters such as pH, total solids content and total phenolic content were determined. The ethyl acetate and butanol extract were prepared by solvent portioning method and their TLC profiling was done. A qualitative comparison of RP-HPLC-DAD chromatograph of both the extracts revealed the presence of flavonoid glycosides and phenolics. The flavonoid glycosides were mainly of flavones (luteoline and apigenin) type (based on UV spectrum studies). Flavonoid -C- glycoside were the major one in both the butanol and ethyl acetate extract of Jaggery (As identified from their characteristic UV spectrum). Since flavonoid -C- glycosides are the major ones therefore the biological activities may be attributed to flavonoid -C- glycosides. The presence of gallic acid, ellagic acid and 5-HMF were also noted. This works highlights the importance of Jaggery in most of the Ayurvedic formulations. This is the first report of chemical investigation on Jaggery which might be considered as step forward to reduce the gap between modern systems of medicine and traditional system of medicine.
