Diabetes is a complex, chronic illness requiring continuous medical care with multifactorial risk-reduction strategies beyond glycemic control. Some studies exist that supports dementia associated in diabetes along with diabetic retinopathy, diabetic nephropathy. Although, there are many studies done previously there is no scope regarding the diabetic dementia. Also, there is higher prevalence in the area where study done which serves to be assessment of cognition levels. We measured the association of dementia with type 2 diabetes. in a sample of 253 type 2 diabetes patients with >18 year of age in Warangal at Veda Sai polyclinic, using MMSE (mini mental state examination) for dementia as tool and examined the subjects socio-demographic and diabetes related clinical characteristics which associated with dementia. The influence of patient socio-demographic and clinical characteristics on dementia was examined using linear regression SPSS version 14.0. The results of this study demonstrated a significant level of 0.048 for dementia and disease duration in diabetic patients. The HbA1C (Hemoglobin A1) levels shows the relation between the glycemic levels and the cognition (p=0.000). The assessment for the dementia is categorized and our study found that 58% of subjects are with no cognitive impairment. Whereas 21% are with severe and mild. The linear logistic regression analysis showed that diabetes duration was significantly associated with MMSE score, which indicated that as disease progress decline in cognition occurs. This represents a direct relation between the diabetic disease duration, hyperglycemia and cognition levels.
