In ayurvedic the leaves of the Tephrosia purpurea Linn. is useful in jaundice and the decoction of the roots given in dyspepsia, diarrhea rheumatism, asthma and urinary disorders. But there is no scientific evidence for cancer study of cell line cytotoxicity. In this study areal part of Tephrosia purpurea were collected and identified and the cytotoxic effects of Hydro alcoholics (ethanol 70%), chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts on human cancerous cell line (HeLa) were determined. Different concentration of the extracts were added to the cultured cells and incubated for 72 h. cell survival was evaluated using MTT assay. The ethyl acetate extract of T. purpurea at tested concentrations showed a comparable cytotoxic effect to taxol against HeLa cell (15 µg/ml). In conclusion, the higher cytotoxic activity seen with ethylactate extract may be related to the presence of lipophilic glycosides as non-polar compounds extracted by ethylacelate.
