Arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, systemic autoimmune disease characterized by pain, swelling and inflammatory diseases including different types of rheumatic diseases are a major and world wide problem. Gastrointestinal side effect is the major problem associated with the presently available non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. Now a day’s world population moves towards herbal remedies for treatment of such diseases. The use of herbal medicine becoming more popular due to its less toxicity and side effects than allopathic medicines. Medicinal plants play an important role in the development of potent therapeutic agents. The number of plants has been screened for their anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic activity, but only few of them reached up to the clinical level. In this review an attempt has been done to highlight the work on indigenous medicinal plants having anti-arthritic potential.
