Phycocyanin is a phycobiliprotein that has been recently reported to exhibit a variety of pharmacological properties. Which have attracted attention because of their nutritional value and medicinal properties, at present there is a mass of evidence in favor of the antioxidant properties of Phycocyanin, Studies have shown, by different experimental models, the aim of the review was to evaluate the effects of phycocyanin of S. platensis. Besides, we tried to demonstrate that one of the main components responsible for this antioxidant activity is a biliprotein phycocyanin. For this purpose, we reviewed the antioxidant activity of different fractions of the phycocyanin, through the scavenger activity of hydroxyl radical. We also observed that an increase in phycocyanin content was related to an increase in the antioxidant activity in different fractions, and therefore phycobiliprotein phycocyanin is the component mainly responsible for the antioxidant activity
