The competitiveness of modern market has forced machinetool manufacturers to realize the importance of high reliability and innovative products. CNC lathe is the principal equipment in digital manufacturing system of the modern industry and it is the complex machinery, with high level of automation and complicated structures, so there are lots of failures. The failure of such complicated structure should be avoided as they are used for mass production. Hence, reliability and life cycle cost (LCC) analysis have become the need of recent fast growing industries. The analysis permits to understand the behaviour of the machine and to obtain useful information in order to form maintenance policies based on the analytical results. In this paper, a systematic review on the reliability of CNC assisted machine tools is described. Selection of time to failure and time to repair model is crucial for estimating accurate reliability characteristics of the system.
