This research highlights the facilitating role of knowledge management in research and development\r\n(R&D). Knowledge management meets the essential requirements of problem solving, generation of\r\nnew ideas and productivity enhancement activities of R&D organizations. R&D processes are different\r\nfrom typical organizational processes with well defined procedures and instructions. In R&D,\r\nknowledge creation, capturing, organizing, storing and its utilization, all are going in parallel and\r\nrequire utmost care for maximizing benefits. There is significant potential for improvement in the\r\nperformance of R&D organizations. Recent global financial recession has resulted in scarcity of\r\nresources and is most likely to hamper investment in R&D; therefore, it is envisaged to improve\r\nefficiency and outcomes so as to attract uninterrupted investment. This research identifies key issues\r\nin launching knowledge management initiative in the R&D organizations. Furthermore, knowledge\r\nmanagement tools, strategy and roadmap for subsequent application were discussed. Various\r\nparameters being used for measuring R&D performance were described. The conclusion of this\r\nresearch is that performance of R&D organizations can be enhanced by using knowledge management.
