The present study demonstrates the hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity of Benincasa cerifera against alcohol induced hepatotoxicity. In-vivo antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity of aqueous alcoholic extract of fruits of Benincasa cerifera was carried out using alcohol induced liver damage in wistar albino female rats. Significant hepatoprotective activity of methanolic extract was observed in alcohol induced liver damage. All the elevated liver biochemical parameters like serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), total bilirubin (TB), direct bilirubin, triglyceride (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) in alcohol intoxicated rats were decreased significantly near to normal level by aqueous alcoholic extract of fruits of Benincasa cerifera. Significant in-vivo antioxidant activity was also found with aqueous alcoholic extract. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione and catalase activity was significantly increased and lipid peroxidation was significantly reduced. From this study it was concluded that Benincasa cerifera is an effective antioxidant and hepatoprotective herb.
