Several investigations have confirmed the efficacy of many of these traditional preparations, some of which have proven efficacy. In the present study antiarthritic activity of ethanolic extract of roots of Smilax perfoliata on complete freunds adjuvant method was investigated. Smilax perfoliata L. (Smilaceae) has been used in Indian traditional medicines against various ailments. Arthritis was induced by injecting 0.05 ml of suspension of killed mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria (0.5% w/w) homogenized in liquid paraffin into the left hind paw, these complete freunds adjuvant method rats were divided into five groups: first group received 1% CMC to serve as arthritic control, second group received complete freund’s adjuvant 0.1ml to serve as negative control group, third group received Indomethacin 10mg kg-1 b.wt (p.o) for 12 days, fourth group received ethanolic extract of Smilax perfoliata (EESP) 200mg kg-1 b.wt (p.o) for 12 days, fifth group received ethanolic extract of Smilax perfoliata (EESP) 400mg kg-1 b.wt (p.o) for 12 days. The histological studies, haemotological, biochemical parameters and measured paw volume are used to assess the effectiveness of the treatment. Increasing dosage of Smilax perfoliata ethanolic extract produced a dose dependent significant reduction in the arthritic activity. It is concluded based on these findings that S.perfoliata may be effective in treating arthritic activity.
