This multidisciplinary journal deals with all the aspects related to energy and power engineering with special emphasis on alternative fuels, bio-energy, coalbed methane, combustion, conventional energy power generation, electrical technologies, energy analysis and optimization, energy efficiency, energy resources, energy storage, heat pumps, hydro, organic and inorganic photovoltaics, petroleum engineering, power electronic engineering, small-scale nuclear, solar energy, tidal power, wave power, wind power etc.
Combustion of coal produces heat which converts water into steam. The produced steam is used in many industries including power generation. However, combustion of coal produces greenhouse gases and gases contribute to acid rain. Combustion optimization reduces coal consumption and contributes towards sustainable development. Most of the coal is used to generate electricity. So, combustion optimization in coal fired boiler used in power generation increases efficiency, reduces cost, conserves natural resources and protects environment. The coal being a heterogenous material and having different characteristics, needs optimization of combustion for improved efficiency. The paper describes efficiency improvement of combustion for coal having different proximate analysis parameters....
Experimentally validated void reactivity calculations were used to study the feasibility of a change in the design basis of Atucha II Nuclear Power Plant including the Large LOCA event. The use of CARA fuel element with burnable neutronic absorbers and enriched uranium is proposed instead of the original fuel. The void reactivity, refuelling costs and power peaking factors are analysed at conceptual level to optimize the burnable neutronic absorber, the enrichment grade and their distribution inside the fuel. This work concludes that, for the considered plant conditions, either a void reactivity coefficient granting no prompt critical excursion on Large LOCA or negative void reactivity are achievable, with advantages on refuelling cost and linear power density...
The aim of STLF is to predict the future electricity load based on the recognition of similar repeating trends of patterns from historical load data. Normally, there are two different methods of forecasting models - the traditional models and the modern techniques. Traditional forecast models entail time series and regression analysis through the use of statistical models such as exponential smoothing, regression, Box-Jenkins model, State-Space Model, Kalman Filter etc. These models are mostly linear methods and have limited ability to capture non-linearities in the load time series pattern. They require expert knowledge and are much complex to operate. In the recent years, many researchers switched to try the modern techniques based on artificial intelligence. Of all, the Artificial Neural Network (NN) receives the most attention. NN is regarded as an effective approach and is now commonly used for electricity load forecast. The reason for its popularity is its ease of use and its ability to learn complex input-output relationship. The ability to learn gives NN a better performance in capturing nonlinearities for a time series signal. Therefore, this project proposes a model comprising neural networks as its forecasting tool. A NN based forecast model requires historical electricity load data as the input variable to perform STLF. It contains some hidden time-variant pattern. These patterns could be informative to a NN based forecaster to enhance the NN’s ability in learning the signals. Thus to extract hidden patterns from the electricity load data, a wavelet decomposition technique is introduced. In the proposed model, initially wavelet decomposition has been performed on historical electricity load data, historical previous day data and historical price data of one month. Target data for next year same month also used for the training of Neural Network model. The useful decomposed components of both based on energy level is then feed to the NN model for training, testing and validation. Finally the output of NN model is converted into wavelet reconstruction which is the predicted data....
Operations Research possesses a wide range of applications in various fields. Rather, the use of Operations Research is inherent in our daily life. We perform various optimization related decisions in our day to day activities like maximizing time, minimizing the household expenditure etc. In this time of global economic meltdown and global environmental crisis, the role of Operations Research has gained tremendous significance. Environmental crisis is mainly due to global warming. Bad energy management leads to emission of greenhouse gases which increases the global warming. The excessive use of non-renewable and polluting energy resources like coal, petroleum etc. elevates global warming. Therefore, the energy resources must be used intelligently. Proper use of renewable energy resources is the key to better energy management and hence better environmental management. Electrical energy is an integral part of modern life. We rely on this key energy source for lighting, cooking, cooling, industrial applications and many more. In India, electrical energy is produced mainly by thermal power plants which are costly and polluting also. Although, the renewable energy sources for power generation in India are hydro, wind etc. In developing countries like India the consumption of electrical energy has increased considerably. Despite all possible efforts, the rural population of India is not getting sufficient electric power for its domestic purposes. However, in urban areas, the power consumption is considerably very high. The lack of proper energy management results into such disparities in power consumption and distribution. Proper electrical energy management deals with the determination of optimal power consumption by different units and its distribution accordingly. \r\nThis paper deals with the electrical energy management by using operations research techniques. A case of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), Katra has been considered. The optimal power consumption has been computed using a linear programming model. This study would really help to locate the power requirements in different units of the university. Moreover, some useful suggestions and recommendations have been made for power saving to the SMVD University....
