Nowadays birth (BI) and Neonatal Care (NCI) injuries have to be considered as a significant cause of neonatal \r\nmorbidity and mortality. Since they are always delicate to manage after disclosure, they are usually less often reported. \r\nThus, selections of extraordinary cases are presented most considerately. \r\nThe institutional files of 18 neonates have been selected. In the BI-group 2 complex injuries happened during \r\nCaesareans, 5 during vaginal deliveries, while in the NCI-group 8 happened during NICU and 3 during home care. \r\nMedian time of presentation has been the 2nd (Range 1-3) day, respectively the 1st (Range 1-3) week of life. Six \r\nneonates underwent surgery, 4 closed bone reduction, the remaining 8 could be treated non-surgical. Even lethal \r\noutcomes have to be considered. \r\nBI- injuries and NCI-injuries present as a special aspect of newborn surgery. For their successful management \r\ngreat expertise and empathy is needed by every individual carer in charg...
Celiac disease is an autoimmune enteropathy in genetically susceptible individuals triggered by exposure to\r\nwheat gluten. Celiac disease presented classically with malabsorption related symptoms. The term ââ?¬Å?atypicalââ?¬Â celiac\r\ndisease is used to describe patients presenting with extraintestinal symptoms, positive serology and typical small\r\nintestinal changes. Few studies had addressed atypical or silent CD in the Middle East. In this case series we are\r\npresenting the first cases of CD diagnosed at our new service at South Jordan. The small number limits any statistical\r\nconclusions, but it shows that the non-classical presentations are not uncommon in our rural community....
Ganglioneuroma arise from sympathetic ganglions and belongs to the group of neurogenic tumors including ganglioneuroblastoma and neuroblastoma. Ganglioneuroma can be considered a benign form of neuroblastic tumors, and is thought to be either a primary ganglioneuroma or follows a spontaneous or treatment-induced differentiation of neuroblastoma or ganglioneuroblastoma. Histopathology is the gold standard for diagnosis. Complete excision cannot always be done because of surgical complications. Therefore, imaging methods are required for distinguishing malignity and benignity. Benign and malign lesions such as ganglioneuroblastoma, neuroblastoma and ganglioneuroma have different ADC on diffusion weighted MRI. We report a 10-year-old-male with abdominal ganglioneuroma surrounding the superior mesenteric artery in which diffusion weighted MRI was used for diagnosis....
Mesenchymal hamartomas are the second most common benign tumor of the liver in the pediatric age group. Cystic mesenchymal hamartoma of the liver must be distinguished from other liver tumors such as infantile haemangioendothelioma, hepatoblastoma and biliary rhabdomyosarcoma are all described and there can be considerable overlap in their radiological appearance. Some children with cystic mesenchymal hamartoma have been inappropriately treated for presumed hydatid disease. We report a 2-year-old boy with mesenchymal hamartoma mimicking hydatid cyst....
Objective: The purpose of the study was to examine the blood lipid profile in children with beta-Thalassemia major, and to determine the factors that affect it.\r\n Material and Method: Files of eighty-five patients between the ages of five and fifteen with beta-Thalassemia major who were receiving regular chelation therapy followed by from paediatric policlinic of our hospital were examined retrospectively. Blood lipid profiles of fifty-five healthy children were taken for use as the control group. A total of 117 children were enrolled and examined in the study.\r\n Findings: Hb and Hct values of the group with Beta-Thalassemia major were significantly lower than the control group (p<0.005). Ferritin values in the group with Beta-Thalassemia major were found to be significantly higher than in the control group (p<0.005). Cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol levels were found to be significantly lower in patients with Beta-Thalassemia major than in the control group (p<0.001), while the triglyceride level was found to be higher (p<0.001).\r\nResult: We determined a positive correlation between triglyceride and serum ferritin levels. It may indicate excessive iron loading, and changes in blood lipid values in patients with Beta-Thalassemia major....
Thyroxine may induce seizures in patients of all ages, and has been reported in only few cases.\r\nElectroencephalogram, computerized tomography and other imaging techniques may be helpful in early diagnosis.\r\nThe measurement of thyroid hormone levels might be justifiable if the cause of convulsion in a patient is not apparent.\r\nWe report a case of hyperthyroidism presented with a generalized tonic clonic seizures in a 14-year-old female patient\r\nand also a review of diagnosis, management and outcomes of the reported series of seizures in thyrotoxicosis....
