The dried powder of premna latifolia was used to treatment the epilepsy in different doses of ethanolic extract (200 mg/kg, 600 mg/kg and 800 mg/kg) and Phenytoin (20mg/kg) as standard drug in experimental animal models like, Maximm electric shock test in mice, pentylene induced convulsions in mice, from all the experimental model results were observed that the premna latifolia was possess the dose dependent anticonvulsant activity and significantly controlled the seizures of all stages in mice. The present study conclded that the effectiveness of the plants extract in the experimental convulsion used probably suggests that the plant could be used in both Petitmal and Grandmal types of epilepsy....
Tamarindus indica is a plant that is used in traditional medicine for the treatment of cold, fever, stomach disorder, diarrhoea, jaundice and as skin cleanser. The objective of this research was to determine antimicrobial activity of methanol extracts obtained from seeds of T. indica. Results of the phytochemical studies revealed the presence of tannins, flavonoids, saponins, triterpenoids, steroids, glycosides, anthraquinones, reducing sugars, carbohydrates, proteins, and amino acids in T. indica seeds extract. Antimicrobial activity was measured using agar diffusion method against Salmonella Paratyphi A, Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Vibrio cholerae, Salmonella paratyphi B, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus subtilis, Providencia alcalifaciens, Proteus mirabilis, Cladosporium fulvum, Neurospora crassa and Aspergillus niger. In antibacterial assay, T. indica seeds extracts showed middle results, but in antifungal assay, it showed very strong results. So this plant can be used as a good source of potential antifungal agent and also antibacterial agent....
The acute toxicity study were performed in Swiss mice with sequentially extracted petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of root, stem and leaf of C. procera (Ait.) R.Br. (Asclepiadaceae). All extracts were also evaluated for the changes in hematological parameters in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats at 100 and 250 mg/kg doses. The following compounds were used as positive controls: insulin N (1 IU/kg), metformin (500 mg/kg), glibenclamide (2.5 mg/kg) and acarbose (20 mg/kg). In adult mice, single oral dose of the petroleum ether and methanol extracts of root and leaf of C. procera (5ââ?¬â??2000 mg/kg) induced an increase in the incidence of general behavioural adverse effects and fall in category under moderately toxic. The mortality rate in these mice were observed after receiving the doses beyond 2000 mg/kg (LD50 ~ 1000 mg/kg). In contrast, other extracts of C. procera were well tolerated in mice up to the oral dose of 2000 mg/kg with no incidence of mortality and fall in category under slightly toxic. Induction of diabetes in rats with STZ enhanced the levels of monocyte and eosinophil, in addition the reduction in the levels of RBC and hemoglobin were also observed. The root methanolic, stem methanolic and leaf ethyl acetate extracts of C. procera significantly reduced the monocyte and eosinophil levels; further, these treatments also augmented the levels of RBC and hemoglobin in STZ induced diabetic rats. No change in other hematological indices indicates that the plant extracts are nontoxic to rats at doses of 100 and 250 mg/kg....
To evaluate the antidiabetic activity of Homalium zeylanicum stem bark extracts against Alloxan induced Diabetes mellitus. Diabetes was induced in male Wistar rats by intraperitoneal injection of Alloxan (90mg/kg). Ethanol extract of Homalium zeylanicum stem bark were administered to the experimental rats (250mg and 500mg/kg, p.o. for 28 days). The antidiabetic & antidyslipidemic, effects of these extracts was evaluated by the assay of biochemical parameters (Blood glucose and lipid profiles, SGOT, SGPT) and histopathological studies of the liver. In Ethanol extract-treated animals, the hyperglycemia by the Alloxan was controlled significantly by restoration of the levels of serum glucose, lipid profile and liver enzymes as compared to the normal and the standard drug Metformin treated groups. Histology of the liver sections of the animals treated with the extracts showed the presence of normal hepatics, absence of necrosis and fatty infiltration, which further evidenced the hepatoprotective activity. Ethanol extract of the stem bark of Homalium zeylanicum possesses significant antidiabetic, antidyslipidemic and hepatoprotective activity....
Aim of the study:The present investigation was carried out to highlight the hepatoprotective activity of PAEDERIA FOETIDA leaves against liver cirrhosis\r\nMaterials and Methods: The ethanolic extract of Paederia foetida leaves subjected to acute toxicity studies as per OECD guidelines 423, and based on the report two doses (250/500mg/kg b.wt) were fixed for pharmacological studies. Liver cirrhosis was induced by carbon tetra chloride (2.4ml/kg b.wt).Five groups of wistar rats of six animals in each group was allocated. The parameters changes in liver weight, ascites volume, biochemical estimation and glycogen determination were performed. \r\nResults & discussion: The extract successfully showed the hepatoprotective effect in dose dependent manner and was statistically significant by oneway ANOVA followed apost hoc Bonferroni test....
The plant Flacourtia sepiaria has numerous therapeutic utility in folk medicine. So the plant has been selected to investigate the anti-arthritic and anticancer activities of various extracts. The anti-arthritic as well as anti-cancer activities of various extracts of aerial parts of Flacourtia sepiaria was examined by protein denaturation inhibition method, membrane stabilization method and MTT calorimetric assay in HeLa and MCF-7 cell lines respectively. The inhibition of protein denaturation and membrane stabilization was highest in methanolic extract and lowest in petroleum ether extract. The anti-arthritic activities of methanolic extract was significant (p<0.05) when compared with standard diclofenac. The maximum percentage inhibition of protein denaturation and membrane stabilization of methanolic extract was found to be 80.37±1.34 and 78.57±1.39 at a dose of 1000 µg/ml respectively. The MTT assay showed that the methanolic extract has moderate cytotoxicity against the cell lines. The result shows that the Flacoutia sepiaria exhibited anti-arthritic and anti-cancer activity....
Solanum xanthocarpum Schrad & Wendl is a plant used for various therapeutic purposes in different systems of medicine, especially Ayurveda. The fruit, stem, leaves, aerial parts, root and the whole plant possess activities of therapeutic significance. This study was aimed at investigating the antiadipogenic activity of ethanolic extracts of fruit and aerial parts,in 3T3L1cell lines. Previous studies by the communicating author have proved the antidiabetic potential of the plant. Its antiadipogenic efficacy would be an advantage while treating diabetes. The results showed that the ethanolic extract of the plant SXA 200 µg/ml and SXF 50 µg/ml possessed good antiadipogenic activity in 3T3L1 cells....
