Nursing presence, although it involves action at times, is a humanitarian quality\nof relating to a patient that is known to have powerful and positive implications for both\nnurse and patient. However, this phenomenon has not been well understood. Three\ntheories, drawn from the work of Paul Ricoeur and Hans-Georg Gadamer, served as the\nboundaries for both data collection and analysis. The theories were narrative identity, play\nand solicitude. This study follows a critical hermeneutic approach to field research and\ndata analysis. Literature regarding nursing presence is reviewed and discussed, and\nin-depth conversations with eleven participants are recorded. Examining the phenomenon\nof nursing presence through the hermeneutic lenses of narrative identity, play and solicitude\nhas elucidated the role of ethical orientation, creativity and connection with the human\nexperience through exploration of self and other. This more nuanced and complex\nunderstanding adds depth to the conversation and offers new possibilities to the effort to\nencourage and support presence in nursing practice....
Background. Although pressure ulcer development is now generally considered as an indicator for quality of nursing care,\nquestions and concerns about situations in which they are unavoidable remain. Awareness about the significance of the problem,\npositive attitude towards prevention, and an adequate level of knowledge are cornerstones to effectively prevent pressure ulcers.\nObjective. To assess nurses knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers to expressed pressure ulcer prevention practice in Addis\nAbaba government hospitals. Methods and Materials. This is a cross-sectional study by design. A total of 217 eligible nurses\nparticipated in the study and data were collected through pretested self-administered questionnaire. Results. When queried,\n61.2% of the respondents had adequate knowledge on pressure ulcer prevention practices, while 68.4% had favorable attitudes\ntowards prevention practices. Moreover, 67.3% of participants had good pressure ulcer prevention practices. Conclusion and\nRecommendation. More than half of the nurses were found to have adequate knowledge about pressure ulcer prevention and their\nattitude towards it was overall favorable. Expressed pressure ulcer prevention practice was affected by the participants level of\nknowledge, attitude, and barriers of care. To provide effective prevention of pressure ulcer, nurses level of knowledge and attitude\nshould be enhanced besides resolving these barriers....
Background. Childrens decisions concerning investigation and treatment may be based on the results of temperature alone.\nAlthough the accuracy of axillary temperature measurement is affected by a number of factors, device dwell time and device type\nare common. Objective. Compare body temperature between glass mercury thermometer (GMT) and digital thermometer (DT).\nMethod. Comparative descriptive study was used. A total of 101 samples were taken with convenient sampling technique, but 98\nwere analyzed. Statistical significance (...
Recent longitudinal data suggest a close association between depression and lifestyle. Little\nwork to date has estimated the prevalence of depression in the nursing workforce in China, nor\nconsidered what lifestyle factors might be correlated with itââ?¬â?a gap filled by the present study. The\nstudyââ?¬â?¢s web-based cross-sectional survey solicited data from qualified nurses aged between 21 and\n65 registered with the Hong Kong Nursing Council. The Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale 21\nwas used to measure 850 nurses for depression, anxiety and symptoms of stress; a generalized linear\nregression model examined associations between lifestyle factors and depression. Mean depression\nsymptom scores show a downward linear trend for male and female participants. Gender and\nage, however, did not emerge as significant predictors of depression. Three lifestyles factors (sleep,\nentertainment and hobbies) showed a significant association with depression. Nurses should make\ntherapeutic lifestyle changes to improve their work-life balance and safeguard their functioning at\nwork and personal well-being....
The awkward movements and postures associated with childcare activities can lead to musculoskeletal symptoms in the neck and\nshoulders. ââ?¬Å?Dakkoââ?¬Â is a method for carrying a child in Japan, and recently it has been reported to cause shoulder stiffness. To our\nknowledge, the relationship between childcare activities and the physical load on the neck and shoulders is poorly understood.The\npresent study aims to clarify the muscle load on the neck and shoulder region through dakko simulations. First, the association\nbetween dakko movements and trapezius muscle activity is clarified by image and electromyogram analyses. Based on this\nclarification, the distributions and intensity of the muscle load from repetitive dakko movements are clarified using myogenic\npotential topography. During dakko movements, trapeziusmuscle activity was observed when lifting up and setting down the child,\nbut not when holding the child. For the repetitive movements, myogenic electrical potentials were observed in the trapezius region\nafter movement load, and individual characteristics of participants were revealed in both the load distributions and the recovery\nprocess. Repetitive dakko movements likely induced sustained muscle tonus in the trapezius, which may be a factor related to\nshoulder stiffness....
