A 17-year-old male presented to our ED complaining of pain and swelling at the base of the first metacarpal after attempting to
remove a catfish from his fishing line 12 hours prior to arrival. Radiographic images demonstrated a foreign body (FB), which
was detectable by ultrasound. Hand surgery was consulted and took the patient to the operating room for exploration and
removal of two serrated radiopaque catfish spines that were deeply embedded in the left thumb. Conclusion. Penetrating injury
from hardhead catfish (Ariopsis felis) spines can cause hidden FB, envenomation, infection, and secondary damage to nearby
structures. Imaging should be done for these patients to ensure they obtain timely and complete extraction of the venomous
structures. Surgery should be consulted for operative management to avoid damage on removal of the catfish spine remnants....
Introduction: A case of lumbar artery pseudo-aneurysm after surgery for
lumbar vertebra burst fracture is presented. Only two cases secondary to
spinal trauma and revealed after surgery have been described in the literature.
A review of literature was conducted and a possible relationship with burst
fracture or reduction maneuvers was discussed. Case Presentation: Here, we
report a post traumatic lumbar burst facture with incomplete motor deficit of
lower limbs after a fall. Surgical reduction and stabilization via posterior approach
were performed. Post-operatively, a hemorrhage through surgical
wound had been noticed. Pseudo-aneurysm of the lumbar artery at L3 level
was diagnosed and embolisation was performed. Conclusion: This is a rare
case of pseudo-aneurysm occurring in the setting of surgical stabilisation after
a trauma. It was revealed by a hemorrhage discovered as a late complication.
We should be aware of such potential complication as a................
Background. Massive blood loss is the most common cause of immediate death in trauma. A massive blood transfusion (MBT)
score is a prediction tool to activate blood banks to prepare blood products. )e previously published scoring systems were mostly
developed from settings that had mature prehospital systems which may lead to a failure to validate in settings with immature
prehospital systems. )is research aimed to develop a massive blood transfusion for trauma (MBTT) score that is able to predict
MBT in settings that have immature prehospital care. Methods. )is study was a retrospective cohort that collected data from
trauma patients who met the trauma team activation criteria. )e predicting parameters included in the analysis were retrieved
from the history, physical examination, and initial laboratory results. )e significant parameters from a multivariable analysis
were used to develop a clinical scoring system. )e discrimination was evaluated by the area under a receiver operating
characteristic (AuROC) curve,...................
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a kind of serious mental disorder
that occurs after severe traumatic events. It is characterized by severe emotional
and memory damage. This paper reviews the relevant research literature
on PTSD at home and abroad in recent years, and reviews the mechanism
of cognitive impairment in mental trauma to reveal the functional mechanism
of cognitive impairment in post-traumatic stress disorder, in order
to provide reference for future research....
Background: Alcohol and drug screens in trauma patients are endorsed by
the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. The objective was
to determine the characteristics and frequency of alcohol and poly-drug combinations
in patients triaged by Trauma Team Activation (TTA) codes. Methods:
A retrospective study of a Level I hospital trauma registry was initiated
with 14,972 patients of whom 7028 (47%) were Substance Users (SU). There
were 10,369 TTA patients: 5396 (52%) were SU, and 4603 (31%) non-TTA
patients, of whom 1632 (35.5%) were SU. Inclusion criteria were: age ≥14
years old, blood alcohol level and Urine Drug Screen (UDS) documentation,
Injury Severity Score (ISS), TTA code, hospital charges and Length of Hospitalization
(LOS). Statistical analyses were performed with one-way ANOVA,
Maximum Likelihood chi squared, and Mann-Whitney U tests..................
