The primary goal of this review article is to offer a comprehensive analysis of recent advancements in excipient technology as well as the methods used to create such excipients. Formulation scientists have recognized that single component excipients do not always provide the required performance to enable those active pharmaceutical ingredients to be adequately formulated or manufactured, so they have focused their efforts on the development of multifunctional excipients with improved performance to meet the needs of formulation experts in terms of cost of production, increased efficiency and improved product quality. Co-processing is an innovative mechanism in which two or more excipients combine at the sub-particle stage, resulting in a synergy of functionality enhancements thus masking the unwanted properties of individual excipients. The demand for excipients with improved functionalities, especially in terms of flow and compression properties, has increased as the tablet manufacturing process has progressed. co-processed excipients are a sub-particle blend of two or more existing excipients that maximize the advantages of the added excipients while minimizing their deficits. The number of adding excipients in the tablet has been drastically decreased thanks to these multifunctional excipients.
