Cosmetics are incredible in demand since historical time till day. Lipstick formulations are most widely used to enhance the beauty of lips and to add glamor's touch to the makeup. It is difficult to apply lipsticks to the dried, chafed, chapped, cracked lips with sores and lesions. In such cases, one can use medicated lipsticks for curing topical infections and beautification of lips with natural colour. With this aim and objective, an attempt was made to formulate medicated lipstick by using curcuma longa extract. Curcuma longa extract was selected a model herbal drug for the local action on lips as anti-inflammatory and Bixa orellana extract was used as colouring agent. Present study involves the preparation and evaluation of herbal lipstick formulations containing different concentrations of curcuma longa extract and Bixa orellana extract (F1, F2, F3 and F4). Preformulation studies revealed that API and excipients were found to be compatible. In-vitro study was done on Swiss albino mice by inducing paw edema by using carrageenan (1 mg/ml) and changes in paw edema volume was checked on plethysmometer. Formulation (F4) has shown significant reduction in inflammation as compared to other formulations, likely same as marketed preparations Rumalya and Intagesic Gel. The lipsticks were evaluated for their organoleptic properties and found to be satisfactory product to give attractive beauty with therapeutic effect on the diseased lips.
