This work focuses on the analysis of the chemical composition of soils dedicated to agriculture in order to assess the impacts of manganese mining activity in the city of Moanda in South-East Gabon. The result of the analysis obtained using wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence revealed the presence of twenty-seven elements in the seventeen soil samples collected namely: Na, K, Rb, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Ti, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Y, Zr, Nb, Cr, Mn, Al, O, C, P, S, Si, I, Ac and Th. Iron (Fe), aluminum (Al) and manganese (Mn) were respectively higher. The practice of agriculture near mining sites is not without risks for the quality of agricultural products and the health of the population....
X-ray full-field microscopy at laboratory sources for photon energies above 10 keV suffers from either long exposure times or low resolution. The photon flux is mainly limited by the objectives used, having a limited numerical aperture NA. We show that this can be overcome by making use of the cone-beam illumination of laboratory sources by imaging the same field of view (FoV) several times under slightly different angles using an array of X-ray lenses. Using this technique, the exposure time can be reduced drastically without any loss in terms of resolution. A proof-of-principle is given using an existing laboratory metal-jet source at the 9.25 keV Ga K-line and compared to a ray-tracing simulation of the setup....
X-ray backlighters allow the capture of sharp images of fast dynamic processes due to extremely short exposure times. Moiré imaging enables simultaneously measuring the absorption and differential phase-contrast (DPC) of these processes. Acquiring images with one single shot limits the X-ray photon flux, which can result in noisy images. Increasing the photon statistics by repeating the experiment to gain the same image is not possible if the investigated processes are dynamic and chaotic. Furthermore, to reconstruct the DPC and transmission image, an additional measurement captured in absence of the object is required. For these reference measurements, shot-to-shot fluctuations in X-ray spectra and a source position complicate the averaging of several reference images for noise reduction. Here, two approaches of processing multiple reference images in combination with one single object image are evaluated regarding the image quality. We found that with only five reference images, the contrast-to-noise ratio can be improved by approximately 13% in the DPC image. This promises improvements for short-exposure single-shot acquisitions of rapid processes, such as laser-produced plasma shock-waves in high-energy density experiments at backlighter X-ray sources such as the PHELIX high-power laser facility....
Carboxypeptidase T (CPT; EC 3.4.17.18) from Thermoactinomyces vulgaris is a distant homolog of the highly specific pancreatic carboxypeptidase B; but has a broad substrate specificity; the source of which remains unclear. A previous study of the structural bases of the substrate specificity of CPT using stable sulfamoyl analogs of the transition state of the elimination of leucine; phenylalanine; arginine; and glutamic acid; showed that the binding of the C-terminal residue of the substrate to the primary selectivity pocket of CPT leads to a change in the distance between Zn2+ and the sulfur atom. This value is related to the efficiency of catalysis of the corresponding substrate or the inhibition constant of the corresponding stable analog of the transition state. In this work; we obtained crystallographic and kinetic data of the complex of CPT with N-sulfamoyl-L-valine; confirming the effect of the binding of the ligand’s side group by the primary specificity pocket of CPT on the structure of the catalytic center; which can explain the unusual substrate specificity of CPT....
The content of Si, Mn, V, Cu and other impurity elements in tool steel samples was analyzed by wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). Using Ag target X-ray tube and the SDD detector (FWHM < 135 eV@5.9 keV). The best working conditions of the instrument are tested before measurement, including tube pressure, flow, filter used and measuring time. The repeatability of the instrument is verified to meet the standard. Finally, the detection limit of the instrument is tested. In the analysis and comparison, linear regression method is used to eliminate the matrix effect among the elements in the sample, and it is found that the multiple linear regression method has a good correction effect on the matrix effect. The results show that the average relative errors of Si, Mn, V and Cu are 3.24%, 3.05%, 0.29% and 0.59% respectively by using the optimal linear regression analysis.
