An X-pinch scheme of a low-current generator (45 kA, 50 ns rise time) is characterized as a potential efficient source of soft X-rays. The X-pinch target consists of wires of 5 m in diameter— made from either tungsten (W) or gold (Au)-plated W—loaded at two angles of 55 and 98 between the crossed wires. Time-resolved soft X-ray emission measurements are performed to provide a secure correlation with the optical probing results. A reconstruction of the actual photodiode current profile procedure was adopted, capable of overcoming the limits of the slow rising and falling times due to the “slow” response of the diodes and the noise. The pure and Au-platedWdeliver an average X-ray yield, which depends only on the angle of the crossed wires, and is measured to be ~50 mJ and ~70 mJ for the 98 and 55 crossed wire angles, respectively. An additional experimental setup was developed to characterize the X-pinch as a source of X-rays with energy higher than ~6 keV, via time-integrated measurements. The X-ray emission spectrum was found to have an upper limit at 13 keV for the Au-platedWconfiguration at 55. 'is paper proposes a Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) based model for the diagnosis of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 viral pneumonia diseases. 'ese diseases affect and damage the human lungs. Early diagnosis of patients infected by the virus can help save the patient’s life and prevent the further spread of the virus. 'e CNN model is used to help in the early diagnosis of the virus using chest X-ray images, as it is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways of diagnosing the disease. We proposed two convolutional neural networks (CNN) models, which were trained using two different datasets. 'e first model was trained for binary classification with one of the datasets that only included pneumonia cases and normal chest X-ray images. 'e second model made use of the knowledge learned by the first model using transfer learning and trained for 3 class classifications on COVID-19, pneumonia, and normal cases based on the second dataset that included chest X-ray (CXR) images. 'e effect of transfer learning on model constriction has been demonstrated. 'e model gave promising results in terms of accuracy, recall, precision, and F1_score with values of 98.3%, 97.9%, 98.3%, and 98.0%, respectively, on the test data. We propose a new method to determine the absolute structure of chiral crystals, which is based on the chiral asymmetry of multiple scattering diffraction. It manifests as a difference in the azimuthal dependence of the forbidden Bragg reflection intensity measured with left and right circularly polarized X-ray beams. Contrary to the existing ones, the suggested method does not use X-ray anomalous dispersion. The difference between the Renninger scans with circularly polarized X-rays has been experimentally demonstrated for the 001 reflection intensities in the right- and lefthanded quartz single crystals. A Jmulti-based code on model-independent three-wave-diffraction approach has been developed for quantitative description of our experimental results. The proposed method can be applied to various structures including opaque, organic and monoatomic crystals, even with only light elements. Mudeungsan (Mount Mudeung) is an extinct volcano located in the southwestern part of South Korea that was formed in the Late Cretaceous period. This mountain, 1187 m above sea level, is adjacent to Gwangju Metropolitan City, which has a large population (about 1.4 million) and volcanic rocks, including columnar joints, which form various types of outcrops. Although this mountain was listed as a national geopark in 2014 and a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2018, much basic research has yet to be carried out. In particular, there are no mineralogical studies of volcanic rock samples despite the well-preserved variety of volcanic rocks. For this study, X-ray diffraction analysis was conducted using rock samples from Mudeungsan columnar joints known as tuff. We report that the rocks are mostly dacite, mainly composed of quartz, plagioclase, and sanidine through Rietveld quantitative analysis. In particular, -cristobalite, a crystalline polymorph of silica, appears in the columnar joint rocks, indicating that Mudeungsan experienced an explosive eruption during the formation of the mountain....
Interactions between ultrashort laser pulses with intensities larger than 1013 W/cm2 and solids during material processing can lead to the emission of X-rays with photon energies above 5 keV, causing radiation hazards to operators. A framework for inspecting X-ray emission hazards during laser material processing has yet to be developed. One requirement for conducting radiation protection inspections is using a reference scenario, i.e., laser settings and process parameters that will lead to an almost constant and high level of X-ray emissions. To study the feasibility of setting up a reference scenario in practice, ambient dose rates and photon energies were measured using traceable measurement equipment in an industrial setting at SCHOTT AG. Ultrashort pulsed (USP) lasers with a maximum average power of 220Wprovided the opportunity to measure X-ray emissions at laser peak intensities of up to 3.3 1015 W/cm2 at pulse durations of ~1 ps. The results indicate that increasing the laser peak intensity is insufficient to generate high dose rates. The investigations were affected by various constraints which prevented measuring high ambient dose rates. In this work, a list of issues which may be encountered when performing measurements at USP-laser machines in industrial settings is identified....
