Environmental‐quality and environmental‐protection actions vary worldwide. Investing in environmental quality often involves intertemporal trade‐offs, with present costs and future rewards. A growing body of literature finds that patience, a measure of time preference, is positively associated with pro‐environmental policies, attitudes, and behaviors. However, much of this work relies on contemporaneous measures of patience that may be jointly determined with environmental attitudes, and thus may give rise to spurious correlations, calling the validity of these results into question. This paper contributes to the discussion on the determinants of environmental quality by addressing this methodological concern. We propose an individual measure of patience in the form of inherited cultural values, which is derived from information on the countries of origin of an individual’s parents. We argue that this inherited‐patience measure is plausibly an exogenous event in an individual’s life. Using this measure, we find a strong, positive relationship between inherited patience and concern for the environment. Our results are robust to the inclusion of variables reflecting an individual’s demographic and socioeconomic status, religious identity, trust, political ideology, and location, as well as period and country fixed effects....
To evaluate the quality of cast aluminum alloys quantitatively and intuitively, quality index and quality map have been used. Quality index and quality map are to quantitatively evaluate the quality of cast aluminum alloys according to yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), elongation to fracture (Ef ), and strain energy density (W). There are some quality indices such as Q, QR, QC, and Q0. The quality maps are generated to intuitively evaluate the quality level based on the quality indices. These quality indices and quality maps show the quality levels according to the pairs of tensile mechanical properties such as UTS and Ef, or YS and Ef, or YS and W. By using these quality maps, it is impossible to directly evaluate the quality levels according to the artificial aging heat treatment condition. We develop multiple quadratic polynomial regression models and quality maps for tensile mechanical properties and quality indices of the cast aluminum alloys according to artificial aging heat treatment condition. The performances of the regression models are evaluated using the mean absolute errors, mean relative errors, and coefficients of determination. The regression models and quality maps could be widely used to evaluate the quality of the cast aluminum alloys according to the aging heat treatment conditions and determine the rational aging heat treatment condition....
The number of data centers worldwide is increasing year by year, mostly because of the development of cloud services and applications. In the near future, the rate of construction of data centers will grow, with a corresponding increase in their electrical energy consumption. The requirements of the reliability of the electrical power supply of data centers are one of the highest among industrial power consumers, since uninterrupted power supply is critically important for the continuous functioning of server hardware. The assessment of electrical power supply reliability is one of the most important parts of the design process of data centers. However, the speed of the development of new power equipment does not always make it possible to use classical probabilistic and statistical methods for reliability assessment. Therefore, the development of new methods for reliability assessment based on alternative approaches, which can eliminate the disadvantages of probabilistic and statistical methods, are of great interest. This paper discusses the alternative method for analyzing the reliability of electrical power supply for the case of data centers. The method defines the reliability through the internal information of the system that characterizes the system’s topology, flows of information, energy, and matter in the system....
The present paper proposes a new robust estimator for Poisson regression models. We used the weighted maximum likelihood estimators which are regarded as Mallows-type estimators. We perform a Monte Carlo simulation study to assess the performance of a suggested estimator compared to the maximum likelihood estimator and some robust methods. The result shows that, in general, all robust methods in this paper perform better than the classical maximum likelihood estimators when the model contains outliers. The proposed estimators showed the best performance compared to other robust estimators....
The Chishui River Basin is located in the bordering area of Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan provinces, which serves as an important ecological barrier in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, and plays a leading role in preserving natural environments, protecting water resources, and maintaining soil functions. However, the eco-environmental quality in the basin has encountered serious challenges in recent years, and the conflict between eco-environmental protection and economic development becomes increasingly prominent. Therefore, it is particularly important to quantitatively assess the extent of the eco-environmental changes in this basin. The present study acquired Landsat series remote sensing images based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, constructed a remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) as the assessment index that reflects the eco-environmental quality using principal component analysis, studied the changing trend in the eco-environmental quality using the Sen–Mann–Kendall trend test, analyzed the spatial clustering distribution patterns of the eco-environmental quality, based on spatial autocorrelation analysis, and applied the geographical detector model to determine the impacts of natural and anthropogenic factors on the eco-environmental quality. We further applied the CA–Markov model to simulate and predict the eco-environmental quality of the basin in 2025. The results showed the following: (1) between 2000 and 2020, the eco-environmental quality of the Chishui River Basin had been greatly improved. The average RSEI value increased from 0.526 in 2000 to 0.668 in 2020, and the percentage of areas belonging to the good or excellent quality category increased from 42.65% to 68.48%. (2) The main drivers of the eco-environmental quality included population density, mean annual temperature, land use type and elevation. The interactive effect between these drivers was significantly higher than that of individual drivers, and thus possessed stronger explanatory power for quality differences. (3) It is predicted that in 2025, the eco-environmental quality of the basin will continue to improve, and the proportion of land areas with good or excellent quality will continuously increase. The present study can provide reference value for local environmental protection and regional planning....
